first episode, and a few lucky people have the first disc in its entirety already.

Geoduck: Interestingly, Michelle sounds almost uncannily like the original Japanese performer.

tones and pitches also affect the languages
Shinobi: I don't think they should try to hard to match the Japanese. it's a recipe for disater

Slavik_CC: it's impossible to completely match the japanese.
Arxane: Trying to translate every nuance and tone from Japanese to English is a little silly, IMO
lightningcount: intonation in japanese is nowhere near the same as American, a japanese sarcasm and an
american sarcasm sound nothing alike
AllenDivers: at one of the panels I attended a director was talking about what sounds sexy in japanese
sounds like the girl is in pain in english

Clark: I think you ought to be in the vicinity of the voice, at least. But what works the best for the
character is probably priority one.
Arcturus: I think attempting to match the Japanese word for word, tone for tone, is a recipe for disaster.
Slavik_CC: since when we dub fans ever listen to the anti-dub people? ;)
lightningcount: i have one sub friend who goes as far as saying anime should not be lisenced that we should
have to buy it from the japanese lol

Arcturus: However, I can think of one dub that was succesful in its attempt to sound like the Japanese.

AllenDivers: there's a fine line of what should be done.. I think somewhere along the lines people forget
that they should be just enjoying the dub.. most people over think what's happening which leads to a bad
experience

dialogue. Should they be kept in Japanese or translated?

Nijhazer: Why keep it in Japanese? What does it add?

Nijhazer: All it does is make the actor's performance sound unnatural, and confuse the viewer.

Shinobi: the only thing I can see keeping in japanses is honorifics (maybe) and a few other specific terms
Shinobi: like kenshins attacks
Nijhazer: I have no problem with the Kenshin attacks being left in Japanese because the attack name refers
to something specific.
JK: I'm working on a show right now, where one of the characters says "na-no" at the end of every sentence.
That kind of means, "you know", but having them say "you know" doesn't sound as cute, it's more annoying.
What do you think?
Nijhazer: Sorta like obi, or kimono-- the word, the phrase, refers to something specific. Same with
Kenshin's attacks.

Nijhazer: Everyone in the show talks about the Ryu Tsui Sen, or the Amakakkaruryonohiromeki, but in this
case, it's just a catchphrase. It's not referring to a particular thing. It's there to give the character
personality.
Shinobi: 'you know' might work. hard to say with more info
Nijhazer: I'm particularly bugged by its lack of translation because Michelle Ruff is already straining to
sound like the original Japanese voice actress (another unnecessary step). It just makes a disappointingly
unnatural performance worse.
Shinobi: And Nij is right in the case of RK when they do use Japanese they're refering to a concrete thing

JK: In strawberry eggs we had a small part character nicknamed "Myun" who says "myun" at the end of every
sentence. We kept it as "myun" since that was her nickname.

Nijhazer: Some people end sentences with "you know?"... some with "neh?" and such. It's just a bit of
speech-- shouldn't be a problem. Leaving it as is helps with lip flap as well.

seen as pompous in a funny way.
Shinobi: JK in the case of refering to themselves in 3rd person I'd say do the pronoun
Nijhazer: Hmm... on the other hand, when you use the pronoun it sounds like you're role-playing.
ScarletEmerald: well, for the third person thing they should probably use normal English grammar if they're
using normal Japanese grammar

JK: We kind of used the 3rd person thing for Pai on 3x3 eyes, since she's supposed to speak Japanese with a
broken Chinese accent, she didn't know the language and always spoke about herself in the 3rd person. We
couldn't use the broken accent, but we kept the 3rd person references to help give the gist that this wasn't
her native language.
JK: I agree that the pronoun should be used in most cases, however.
